WHERE WERE THEY?

What I am about to blog doesn’t happen to me alone as much as I have personalized the experience.

I take pleasure in handpicking disadvantaged youth and mentoring them. So, after experiencing the following 2 incidences among many, I did some analysis. My opening question, “Where Were They Before Now? I decided to mentor & help a young man who had been rejected by society & by family. Only his mom and sister were there for him. They however could not provide developmental progression. I gave him a full bursary to study N4-N6 Engineering at my college, pending practical attachment and later a job.

Suddenly educated brothers, sisters, uncles etc. popped up from nowhere with alternative empowerment opportunities and other colorful openings. The young man in question fell for their sweet tongues but…..to cut the long story short, he is currently at home again, with nothing to do. He forfeited the opportunity I had given him based on what the previously ABSENT relatives promised him.

The 2nd experience I had was when I decided to empower a relatives child. After registering the child for an engineering course, another relative suddenly popped up with a lucrative opportunity. Thank God it materialized but that doesn’t take away the after effect it has on me.

So….”WHERE WERE THEY THE WHOLE TIME BEFORE AN UNCONDITIONAL, GENUINE MENTOR CAME ALONG…?”
